Support Internet FAQ's

What types of Internet service do you carry?
We carry both high speed broadband and dialup Internet. Our high speed Internet is serviced by Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and our Dialup by dialup modem.

  • The Difference
    • DSL - This Internet comes through the same copper line as your voice phone service, but at a much higher frequency than your voice phone service. This allows both the high speed Internet and your phone service to work simulataneously. Connections from Heartland Communications range from 256k downloads to 10mb downloads.
    • Dialup - This type of Internet uses a device much like the phone handset to dial to the Iinternet. Connection speeds max out at 52.33k by FCC regulations.
  • The Pro's / Con's
    • DSL - This is a true, unshared, high speed service. When you order 256k download speed you will receive a download rate of 256k per second, the same is said for the rest of our speeds. This is also a very reliable service with very little down time throughout the year. The downside is, in order for DSL to work you MUST have a phone line.
    • Dialup - This is a very cost effective way of surfing the Internet. For simple browsing and sending simple emails, by far the most "banwidth bang for your buck." The disadvantage is downloading anything of large file size over your dialup connection becomes aggravating and cumbersome.
  • Understanding download speeds
    • Speeds are rated at bits instead of bytes
    • There are 8 bits per byte
    • Therefor downloading file at 32kilobytes per second is the equivalent to 256kilobits per second
